I was born and raised in Kent. I had a brilliant art teacher at secondary school who taught me to draw and nurtured my interest in art history, because of her support I gained a place at The Slade School of Fine Art for the four year Diploma course. Then I trained as a secondary school art teacher and worked in schools in Essex and Cornwall.  Now we live in North Devon, near the woods that I frequently draw.

I began to concentrate on my own work about fifteen years ago, working in watercolour and drawing. Now I produce large scale black and white drawings of trees and woods that combine my love of tone and line with an interest in human activity in the landscape and the feelings created in people by woods and trees.
I work from my photographs and use Faber Castell fine ink pens on A1 thin white card at a draughtsman’s drawing board. I start by sketching with soft pencil to mark out the main areas and then use pen to sketch out details, natural objects are very forgiving so they are not accurate copies. Gradually working over the picture in ‘sweeps’ I add more detailing using hatching and my pen at an angle to shade.  I have found that over the years my style has loosened so that with an area of many leaves I gently free scribble the outlines. The last detail is the areas of very dark that help to bring the scene to life.

My drawings are scanned and printed locally and are on sale here. Every year I hope to produce a calendar of 12 drawings ( check availability in September for 2024).  As well as selling directly we send wholesale cards out to independent bookshops around the country and framed and mounted prints to some outlets in the South West. If you contact me I will always try to reply the same day.
